Aikido
Aikido, or harmony spirit way, is a
modern Japanese art of self-defense.
Founded by O'Sensei Ueshiba Morihei in the early 20th century, Aikido
is derived from the more classical combat art of jujitsu. Aikido's techniques
include wrist locks, throws, atemi (strikes), and pins. Aikido emphasizes
an understanding
of anatomy and physics over brute strength. Aikido practitioners study to see attacks and
then
redirect incoming energy to overcome the assault. Aikidoists (aikidokas) work to
maximize efficiency of movement. Defenders move in circular, whirling
patterns as their ukes (attackers) are thrown to the mat with deceptive ease.
Aikido
is well suited to students of all ages and builds. Ukemi (breakfalls) is an
integral part
of aikido training because proper rolling technique minimizes injury .
